How to choose a bed your dog will actually sleep in

Whippet curled asleep in a plush round bed with teal piping

Dogs spend 12 to 14 hours a day sleeping, so the bed is quietly the most-used thing you'll ever buy them. Here's what actually matters when you pick one.

Match the bed to how your dog sleeps

Watch your dog nap for a few days. Curlers, the ones who tuck into a tight ball, tend to relax deeper in bolstered donut beds that support the neck and back. Sprawlers want a flat, open mattress with room to stretch. Leaners love a raised edge to rest their head on.

Older joints need firmer support

Senior dogs and large breeds put real pressure on elbows and hips. A bed that flattens under weight makes stiff mornings worse. Look for dense or orthopedic foam that springs back when you press it, your hand shouldn't touch the floor through the fill.

The washability test

If the cover doesn't come off, the bed will outlast your patience, not the smell. A removable, machine-washable cover is the difference between a bed that lasts a season and one that lasts years.

Size it honestly

Measure your dog from nose to tail base while they're lying down, then add a few inches. Between sizes? Go up. No dog has ever complained about too much bed.
